In chapter 12, Dede is one of the sisters who makes the most courageous movement in my opinion. Dede ends up lying to the police when her and Minerva are pulled over on the way to Monte Cristi. That took a whole lot of courage to be able to do something like that. Especially coming from Dede, the sister who does not try to get involve with the law in the whole book like her other sisters do. Obviously she was even scared doing it as we can see when the cop interrogated her after claiming to be Minerva, "Why did you tell my men you were Minerva?. Dede could barely talk. "I...I... She's my little sister..." (Alvarez 278). It took courage out her, she was so scared and it could have involved her being killed. She could have been killed because Minerva is the one who Trujillo mostly wants dead and Dede risked her own life. Alvarez is showing the theme of courage showing a message that courage means staying strong for family and herself instead of being selfish and running away.

Repitition, In the Time of the Butterflies

On chapter 10 of In the time of the Butterflies, Patria would continuously repeat the phrase "And on the third day he rose again", (Alvarez 201). This phrase was repeated during Patria's time of struggle where everyone around her was being token away to prison by Trujillo and she suffered because of this. This quote reflects all the struggles that Patria is going through the same way that Jesus Christ did. So she is comparing herself to Jesus. Minerva sees herself as Jesus and we can see this clearly when she says "Take me instead, I'll be your sacrificial lamb", (Alvarez 203). So here she refers to Trujillo being god which is a major theme in this story. The theme of all dictators view themselves as a god and deceive all there people like this just how all dictators in the past have done. Patria refers to Trujillo being a god by offering herself as a  sacrificial lamb the way people use to do in the bible of the Abraham religion. Patria offers herself as a sacrificial lamb so all her family in prison can be released and for her son to come back by making this sacrificial of her to make up for their sins the way Jesus sacrificed himself to god in order pay for everyone's sins. A lamb is a highly valued possession
, offered to god (Trujillo) as a sacrifice for the forgiveness of sin.

Patria's Transformation

Patria has changed so much since the start of In the Time of the Butterflies. So we are going to be discussing the change and transformation of Patria since the beginning of the book. When the book started and towards the middle of it, Patria did not want to join the movement with her sisters to overthrow Trujillo. She said it would be against what god wanted for her and god would just want them to watch as Trujillo did the awful things he did. Then she has a change of heart when she sees a little boy die right in front of her own eyes. The little boy is shot right in front of her which makes her realize something. Patria realizes that the little boy could be her son. In the future it can be her son or even daughter who is killed because of Trujillo. So it leads her to join the movement because she sees she can't just stay and watch anymore living by the way she thinks god wants her to. Patria has went from a scared individual who would not fight and has now become a a brave individual who is risking her life by fighting against Trujillo. On page 162 we see an Epiphany from Patria after seeing the boy get killed in front of her, "Coming down that mountain, I was a changed woman. I may have worn the same sweet face, but now i was carrying not just my child but my dead boy as well" (Alvarez 162).

Figurative Language in Time of the Butterflies.

In chapter 6 of In the Time of the Butterflies there is a perfect example of figurative language. Not only that but it reveals a possible theme for the book. Mama: "Ay, mijita, you are going to fight everyone's fight, aren't you?" Minerva: "It's all the same fight, mama." (Alvarez 108). As you can see this is an example of a hyperbole because of course mama is exaggeration on Minerva fighting the world because the would be impossible. This shows how kind and helpful Minerva is because before this was said she was helping an old man out and lost her place in line she was in to report papa missing. Then Minerva responded to mama saying shes going to fight everyone's fight by telling her everyone has the same fight. The same fight means fighting against Trujillo. He is a cruel evil man and of course needs to be stopped by the people of the Dominican Republic. The theme behind this is everyone fights together against injustice.

Hard Minerva Slap

Hello Gotham city, I just finished reading chapter 6 of In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Ohh boy was this chapter juicy and tense with all kinds of action going on around it. No one has ever disrespected El Gran Jefe the way that Minerva did. That girls can not run away from conflicts. We see in Chapter 6 how conflict seems to find Minerva at all times. Minerva is such an intelligent and loyal woman but she can be very foolish at times when it comes to controlling her emotions as we saw when Minerva ended up slapping the great, mighty, all powerful Trujillo. She slapped Trujillo because he was trying to come on to her while dancing and tried making a move on her as he degrades all the women he meets. Of course Minerva is not any ordinary woman and completely shuts off the Jefe when she delivered a slap across his face. On this chapter we can see the beginning of conflict about to begin for Minerva because she slapped Trujillo. This means here family can be murdered, she can be murdered, and all the awful things Trujillo can do to Minerva as punishment. We all know Trujillo will have his revenge against Minerva as stated by Minerva, "But el Jefe has other plans for me. A mind of her own, this little cibaena!" as Trujillo is giving an evil smirk, (Alvarez 101).
