Patria's Transformation
Patria has changed so much since the start of In the Time of the Butterflies. So we are going to be discussing the change and transformation of Patria since the beginning of the book. When the book started and towards the middle of it, Patria did not want to join the movement with her sisters to overthrow Trujillo. She said it would be against what god wanted for her and god would just want them to watch as Trujillo did the awful things he did. Then she has a change of heart when she sees a little boy die right in front of her own eyes. The little boy is shot right in front of her which makes her realize something. Patria realizes that the little boy could be her son. In the future it can be her son or even daughter who is killed because of Trujillo. So it leads her to join the movement because she sees she can't just stay and watch anymore living by the way she thinks god wants her to. Patria has went from a scared individual who would not fight and has now become a a brave individual who is risking her life by fighting against Trujillo. On page 162 we see an Epiphany from Patria after seeing the boy get killed in front of her, "Coming down that mountain, I was a changed woman. I may have worn the same sweet face, but now i was carrying not just my child but my dead boy as well" (Alvarez 162).
